Champeta is the new sound from Colombia. The African originated Colombians living on the Caribbean coast have created this music mixing African sounds, Colombian folk and urban computer-based rhythms.
San Basilio de Palenque, where many of the Champeta singers were born is the last village founded by the ‘Cimarons’, slaves escaped from the plantations. It has been declared Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The people there speak there own language ‘Crillio de Palenque’.
Champeta is still at a very early stage but like Reggaeton, we expect it to explode in the next 10 years.
Some famous singers are Papo Man, Viviano Torres, Justo Valdez, Luis Towers, Mr Black…
Here are some other famous songs:
Batata y su Rumba – Ataole
Luis Africa – Mama Africa
Papo Man – La Comprometida
Mr Black
La Elegida – El Cantanto
Carlos Vives is the most famous Colombian singer after Shakira. He’s the king of Vallenato-pop which uses the traditional Colombian rhythms with Accordion and percussions blended to more modern sounds.
His most famous song is probably Pa mayte, which will make you dance at any time!
